End of Day 10 without power.

I am NOT a happy camper.

Am staying at my Mom's house... she only lost power for 7 hours. So I am not complaining... too much.

I am borrowing someone's intermittent WiFi so am trying to keep to text only or I would upload some spectacular ice pix.

But it was definitely an experience. Listening to the trees breaking was so sad and terrifying at the same time. We stood outside (under cover) listening to sounds like gun shots as the trees snapped from the weight of the ice and watching limb after limb break and fall. =(

They moan and cry before they break. I remember that too well.
Then again, I've only been through small ice storms compared to what hit in your area.

I feel a little selfish for saying so, but I am SO glad not to be in KY right now.

But if everyone is safe, dry and warm, that's a very good thing.

There are so many stories coming out of old folks sitting alone in the dark and cold, running out of food... and just waiting for someone to come along.

The trees (in heavily wooded areas) fell in almost unpenetratable thickets.

All things considered? I am without true complaint. although I am looking forward to being able to go home. Looking forward to connectivity to share pix and stories.

It looks like a tornado went through. The broken tops of trees sticking up like broken bones. It's been days and yet there is still the constant grumble of chain saws.

All the neighborhoods around us have power but we're part of an original settlement/line... which may or may not be the reason they haven't got to us yet. even so our wires are still up and connected.

What they've said? Is that they're working to help more people than just us (6 adults, 3 teens and 3 young children in a total of 4 houses on 17 acres)

Guess we're just not impressive enough.

Oh wow, the conversation above about the trees snapping - how sad. I'm glad you had companions to hunker with during the power outage, and that things are getting back on track.

Amazing how nature can show how vulnerable we really are, isn't it?

<lj-user ="vickita"> went through an ice storm last winter and had posted pix. They had terrible tree damage too... I'm hoping that she can give me some idea of what to expect for the new growth. Poor trees. =(

And being vulnerable? Oh hell yes. That's why I like California best. We only have earthquakes, landslides and wildfires there!! =P

::sends warm thoughts::

What a total pain in the ass, hon! We used to go 3-4 days up in Northern Cal, but nothing like what you are coping with.

Thanks! =)

Compared to some of the people I've heard about? I've got it made in the shade. (We're having fire hazards now =0

There are folks out there, too poor, too uneducated, too remote... to know where to go and who to ask for help.

Back in the Boulder Creek days (and the Sierra commune days) we were prepared for outages. The shock comes when one gets older ::cough:: and can't lift, chop or carry like they used to. =/

Then there's my addiction to the Technologic. =o

I hadn't realised you were caught like this. And yet, you know, London came to a complete halt on Monday with four inches of snow and from the way people were whining, you'd think the end of the world had come. I can't imagine them coping with nine days of no power.

I hope the ordeal ends soon.

I HAZ POWR!!!!!!!!!

Life is good! =D

And I know that I heard a lot of people scoffing at London's shut down with what they considered minimal snow... but it's TRUE! if you don't have a regular occurrence of snow then why would you spend all sorts of your time and budget preparing for it???? That would be like saying that everyone here in the Ice Storm should have had a generator and a chain saw. Bzuh?

But as I mentioned in my 1st line? \0/

Back at my little cottage in the woods enjoying my FAST INTERNET CONNECTION!!

going to post pix next!

Absolutely right. If the authorities had used resources on planning for snow that comes like this about every 30 years, then people would just whine about the waste of their tax money. Some people just like whining, I'm afraid.

Glad that you're home and safe and warm.

Yay powr!!! \o/

Yup, it was last winter, December 2007. Right around the solstice, so it was extra dark. Argh. Hunkering down in my cold, dark house with the kitties for five days, 'cause if they had to stay in it, so did I. Gah.

@!#$% cats. They better have appreciated it, too. *g*
