help with Venetian dialect

Hello wonderful people!

I've got a fantasy story that's set in early 18th-century Venice. I don't speak Italian, and definitely don't know the difference between the various regional dialects, so I'm looking for some help with a nickname in Venetian.

I have a priest who can use magic, who is not exactly a nice guy. Nobody likes to be around him, he's the kind of person you can just tell will erupt like a magic-spewing volcano the moment something doesn't go his way. My main character is ten when she first meets him and has a very visceral Do Not Like reaction to him, comparing him to a pack of rabid dogs. She is not told his name at the time, so in her mind she dubs him Father Mad Dog (creative, I know).

Several years ago I tried to parse "Father Mad Dog" into Italian/Venetian, and I don't know where I came to the conclusion that it'd be "Don Can' Pazzo" but that's what I've been using. I guess somewhere along the line I was under the impression that cane would get shortened to can when used like this. Is any of this correct? Or do I need another phrase entirely?

The one with the quitter

Ohhhhh my goodness. So much to talk about.

I will start with the most freeing: I've decided to leave my job.

If I'm honest, this has been coming for a while, but it was starting to feel like manager's bad behavior was the universe trying to tell me something. I mean, I'd more or less admitted to myself that I likely wouldn't be able to stick it out through the summer like I hoped, but if I was going to do that, I wanted to take at least a month off between jobs to decompress from everything. And salvage at least some of the summer.

But as I perused job listings -- admittedly, all hospital-related -- everything felt more and more depressing. Which, yeah, okay. Job hunting is never going to be super thrilling and inspirational, but like. I dunno. Everything felt suffocating and hopeless.

And then I had a meeting with manager after I got back from Salem. She more or less declared that I would be taking responsibility for the two doctors that I shouldn't be responsible for, whether I liked it or not. She tried to make a few excuses as to why she didn't come to me 1:1 for an update.

At the point she tried to tell me the amount of work I would be doing wouldn't actually be as much as A was doing, I lost it. I flat out told her I could not believe a single word coming out of her mouth because she'd told so many different things to all the different people. Her response? "If you can't trust me, you should find another job."

My victory out of that meeting was that I didn't cry (out of anger). I managed to keep it together for the twenty minutes. As soon as we disconnected, I broke down. Fully and completely. It didn't help that as soon as we logged off Zoom, she's calling me to ask me why I wasn't on site (BECAUSE I WASN'T SUPPOSED TO BE. HOW FUCKING DUMB WOULD I HAVE TO BE TO APPEAR ON A ZOOM FROM HOME WHEN YOUR NEW BS SCHEDULE SAYS I'M SUPPOSED TO BE AT THE HOSPITAL JESUS TAP DANCING CHRIST).

Once I calmed down, I called a coworker (D) and said it for the first time, "I think i have to quit." D and I have almost identical work ethic, so she would understand how big a deal it is for me to say it, and she is the only person I trusted not to gossip about it. And though my manager is not her direct manager, my manager's shenanigans affects D, so she's aware of everything that's going on and also quite fed up with manager's bullshit.

She was very supportive, telling me I had to do what was best for me, and then we shit-talked the manager and higher ups for a bit. After we hung up, I was useless for the rest of the day as my brain takes off in alllll the different directions.

Actually, I wasn't just useless for the rest of the day, I was useless for SEVERAL days. Was I really going to quit my job without a job lined up? Even though I planned to take a month for myself before starting a new job, leaving without a job guaranteed at some point is beyond stupid, right? That is one of the most fiscally irresponsible things a person can do, right???

But along with that, my catholic guilt roared to life. The department is already understaffed thanks to manager, things are going to get worse if I leave. On top of that, I'd talked to my two most demanding doctors at the end of May/beginning of June to explain what was going on with manager overall, and emphasized to them that I did not want to leave my job. Am I really going to make myself a liar?

It wasn't until I started telling other people about the meeting with manager and their reactions to her telling me to get a new job, that I realized just how toxic she was and that I just couldn't stick around.

The nail in the coffin, so to speak, was talking with my therapist. A week had passed at that point, and the only thing really holding me back was the panic of the unknown, along with my concern that I know hard it is for me to get out of a rut once I've settled into one.

All hail therapy.

She asked me some questions. I really had to think about the answers. And then she talked about another patient of hers going through what they call their "Me Year;" they left their job and have been spending all year focused on themself. But they aren't just skipping through the days, they have a plan with measurable goals and a hard end date. And therapist said they're doing fabulously.

I was immediately intrigued, but also said, "Not sure an entire year would be a good idea."

"But could you do six months?"

That was the moment. That was the moment the decision was made.

I've been sick ever since, of course. I want to tell my docs first and one of them was out of the country last week. Once they know, then I can tell my co-workers and then manager, in that specific order. And manager is lucky she's getting a week's notice. But until I can meet with my docs, I have to suffer in silence while I prepare them as much as possible without them knowing.

A-GO-NY.

My last day's next Friday, July 18th. FO' SHO'.

I scheduled an appointment with a friend/life coach next week to discuss setting up a loose plan for the six months. I've started the process to get insurance through the MA marketplace. I enrolled in a workshop for managing ADHD. I've started a list of fun things I want to do. I've started -- well, it started after dad died -- a list of things that need to get done.

Let's fucking gooooooooooo.

Fandom's foibles

Today's jumpscare: the second most common relationship for Arthur Dent is Khan Noonien Singh, because of bad casting and Sherlock obsession on the part of fandom.

I still haven't seen the real Khan movie, but its Robot Chicken opera version made more of an impression on me than the AOS version where they cast B--- C---, which I have never watched and never intend to see.

OTW Board Meeting, July 20, 2025

Posted by callmeri

The OTW Board will be holding its next public meeting from midnight to 1 a.m. UTC on July 20 (what time is that for me?).

This meeting will be held in the Board Discord server. The server will have a team of moderators, a set of rules (including question rules), and community guidelines. The server will remain open even after the meeting, but the channels for meeting and asking questions will be read-only. Board will be posting replies to questions that do not get addressed during the scheduled meeting two weeks after the meeting in the server’s #questions-answers channel.

The agenda will include:

  • Decisions made since the last public board meeting
  • OTW Board Election
  • Updates to the Board Year Roadmap
  • Updates to the OTW Culture Roadmap
  • Any other business (Questions & Answers)

Prior to this meeting, there is an opportunity to ask questions in advance to be answered as part of the meeting. This allows anyone who wishes to ask the Board questions, whether they will be able to attend the meeting live or not. (The Board will also accept questions during the meeting.)

Questions submitted to this Google Form will be accepted up to three days before the meeting begins or until 50 questions have been submitted. At that point, the form will be turned off. You need to be logged in to a Google account to submit a question. In the future, these rules may be amended to adjust as needed. Further information will be available in the OTW Board Discord server.

Weekly proof of life: mainly media (shocking everyone)

[personal profile] scruloose and I did make it to the little farmers' market down the road for its opening day of the season, and even managed to get there earlier than later! (I think it's open from 8 to 1, and we probably were there...a bit after 10?)

We made it home with two quarts of strawberries and one of cherries, new potatoes, a dozen eggs, and boneless chicken thighs, plus a bee balm for the garden, which we quickly tucked into a fairly open space in our little garden bed yesterday evening. (What was there before? UNKNOWN. Will I manage to reconstruct it from old posts or something? Also unknown. But hey, a plant!)

Reading: I finished Everything for Everyone: An Oral History of the New York Commune, 2052–2072 (M.E. O'Brien and Eman Abdelhadi), which was fantastic. On the fiction front, I followed it up with Tamsyn Muir's novella Princess Floralinda and the Forty-Flight Tower (not really my thing--I continue to rarely bond with novellas, I guess--but interestingly done), Sacha Lamb's When the Angels Left the Old Country (marvelous), and Sofia Samatar's The Practice, the Horizon, and the Chain (again, didn't really bond emotionally, but it executed what it was doing beautifully).

Non-fiction: David Chang and Priya Krishna's Cooking at Home: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying About Recipes (And Love My Microwave), which is, like...primarily actually a David Chang book that Priya Krishna did a ton of heavy-lifting assisting on (which may be very normal for co-written cookbooks, but in this case she was interjecting and clarifying in her own voice as well as doing a fair bit of the actual writing in his voice, and it was all very transparent that it was being done that way, but also a little odd to read). I think I bought this as a sale ebook before hearing that Chang (the Momofuku guy) is something of an asshole, but then when I was reading it, it felt really promising as a book that might be genuinely useful for me (and even by cookbook standards, its ebook is terribly formatted), so I was pleasantly surprised to readily find a used half-price hard copy available on line, which is winging its way to me now. I've also made sure that Krishna's own Indian-Ish: Recipes and Antics from a Modern American Family is now on the wishlist where I keep an eye out for ebook sales.

And now I'm reading An Everlasting Meal: Cooking with Economy and Grace by Tamar Adler, which is a cookbook mostly in the form of essays on cooking as a thoughtful/mindful practice.

Watching: One more Murderbot episode to go in this season, and oh, I hope we get a second one. I'm going to miss this little show.

We finished watching the second season of Kingdom (the historical zombies k-drama), which I found very satisfying. The ending very much sets up a subsequent season, and there's a movie out that fills in the backstory of the person/people we glimpse at the end of season 2 who would presumably be extremely central in any further season, but I don't think we feel inspired to watch said backstory movie unless a third season of the show is ever announced and it becomes relevant in that way.
